COMMON STEEL PIPE STANDARDS

1. ASTM Standards

1.1 Carbon Steel & General Structural Steel Pipes

• ASTM A36: Structural steel standard, mainly used for steel plates, sections, and structural welded pipes. Not a dedicated pipe standard but often referenced alongside steel pipes.
• ASTM A53: The most versatile welded/seamless carbon steel pipe, suitable for water, gas, fire protection, and general piping systems.
• ASTM A106: Seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service, graded A/B/C. Commonly used in boilers and superheater pipelines.
• ASTM A135: Electric resistance welded (ERW) steel pipe, designed for low-pressure liquid and gas transmission.
• ASTM A252: Steel pipe for piling applications, used in bridge and building foundation piling.
• ASTM A500: Welded steel pipe (round, square, rectangular) for structural purposes, ideal for building steel structures.
• ASTM A501: Seamless steel pipe for hot-formed structural applications.

1.2 Stainless Steel Pipes

• ASTM A312: Austenitic stainless steel seamless/welded pipe (grades 304, 316L, 321, 310S, etc.), the most widely adopted stainless steel pipe standard.
• ASTM A213: Seamless stainless steel pipe for boilers, superheaters, and heat exchangers.
• ASTM A269: Small-diameter seamless/welded stainless steel pipe, used in instrumentation and capillary tubing.
• ASTM A778: Welded austenitic stainless steel pipe for general service.
• ASTM A790: Duplex stainless steel seamless/welded pipe (grades 2205, 2507, etc.), suitable for corrosive environments.

1.3 Alloy Steel Pipes

• ASTM A335: Seamless alloy steel pipe for high-temperature service (grades P11, P22, P91, etc.), used in power plants and boilers.
• ASTM A210: Carbon steel pipe for boiler applications.

2. API Standards – Oil & Gas Specific

• API 5L: Line pipe for oil and natural gas transmission, the most commonly used standard. Classified into PSL1/PSL2 with steel grades X42, X46, X52, X60, X65, X70, etc.
• API 5CT: Casing and tubing for oil wells (grades J55, K55, N80, L80, P110).

3. EN / DIN / ISO Standards

• EN 10210: Hot-formed seamless steel pipe for structural purposes, used in construction and mechanical structures.
• EN 10216: Seamless steel pipe for pressure and structural applications.
• EN 10217: Welded steel pipe for pressure applications.
• EN 10219: Cold-formed welded steel pipe for structural purposes.
• EN 10253: Steel pipe fittings (elbows, tees, etc.).
• DIN 2448 / DIN 2458: German standard for seamless steel pipe dimensions.
• DIN 1629: Seamless carbon steel pipe (German standard).
• DIN 17175: Heat-resistant seamless steel pipe, used in boilers and high-temperature pipelines.
• ISO 3183: Steel pipe for oil and gas pipeline transportation systems (equivalent to API 5L), adopted globally.

4. GB Standards

• GB 3093: High-pressure seamless steel pipe for diesel engines, used in diesel injection system high-pressure fuel lines.
• GB/T 3639: Cold-drawn or cold-rolled precision seamless steel pipe, suitable for high-precision, high-finish mechanical components.
• GB 5310: High-pressure boiler seamless steel pipe, used in power plant boilers and nuclear power plant high-temperature/high-pressure pipelines.
• GB 5312: Carbon and carbon-manganese steel seamless pipe for marine use, applied in marine boilers, superheaters, and pressure pipes.
• GB/T 8162: Seamless steel pipe for structural purposes.
• GB/T 8163: Seamless steel pipe for fluid transportation.
• GB/T 3087: Low and medium-pressure boiler seamless steel pipe, used in industrial and domestic boilers.
• GB/T 3091: Welded steel pipe for low-pressure fluid transportation (water, gas, air, steam, etc.).
